Seedball the Coastline

Restoring coastal dune habitat after Hurricane Sandy

Queens and Brooklyn, New York

Seedball the Coastline was a campaign to restore lost coastal dune habitat in Rockaway Park, Queens and Staten Island, New York that occurred as a result of Hurricane Sandy in 2012. With the help of the Lower East Side Girls Club and the Museum of Modern Art, Seedball the Coastline planted 20,000+ perennial sea grass-based seed balls designed to stabilize the dunes that were badly eroded during the storm.

A group of Brooklyn residents worked to restore lost honey bee habitat by planting 5,000+ seed balls with red clover, wildflowers, and field peas at the base of street trees in Brooklyn's Zone A Flood Zone, which represent 25% of all New York City homeowners.
